TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE ON-LINE TRAINING

Preparation makes the difference! Plan your on-line training in advance.

Here are 10 simple tips to help you achieve a positive online training experience.

  1. Read the directions
Investing a few minutes reading the directions will help you better understand what you need to do and have a successful engagement.

  2. Schedule 1½ to 2 hours to complete the online training course

  3. Arrange for phone coverage
Coordinate with your supervisor or coworkers to ensure you have an uninterrupted period of time to complete the online training.

  4. Exit all the programs in your PC before starting online training
(i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.) It will prevent distracting pop-up reminders “while training” and help your PC perform more efficiently.

  5. Audio needs
Since the on-line training course is narrated, you will need speakers. Depending of your work environment, headphones may help you focus and avoid distracting others.

  6. Have pen and paper on hand
Take notes and write down your questions. The NIMS course has an in depth audio/video supplement that will help clarify sections of the course.

  7. You must take the on-line exam and get the confirmation email to complete the course.
You can exit and return to the on-line course at any time. When you are ready you can take the on-line exam. This course is different in that you will receive your certificate in the mail from FEMA in 6 to 8 weeks.

  8. Keep your completion email and your Certificate of Completion from FEMA
At the end of the exam, you will be sent a “completion email” that you must forward to the BPTU. Read the forwarding instructions on the web. Make sure you save a copy for your records. If you do not pass the exam the first time, don’t panic. You can take it again.

  9. Read the on-line instructions carefully to apply for CEU’s.

Note: Your PC needs Macromedia Flash 6 player. Also, you will need an email address to register on the FEMA site. If you don’t have an email address, contact the HCA/IT Helpdesk at (714) 834-3128 for assistance.
